SSS Vocation Talk at Cavite State University in the Philippines

On January 6, Sisters Nodelyn and Sonia were blessed with the opportunity to offer a Vocation Talk at Cavite State University’s Department of Social Work. Around sixty social work students gathered to listen, reflect, and engage. Sister Nodelyn shared the story of our community—our roots, mission, and presence in both the United States and the Philippines—while Sister Sonia offered a heartfelt reflection on her own vocation journey, weaving together the call to religious life and the work of a social worker.

When we asked the students if they had heard of the Sisters of Social Service, nearly all answered no—except for one who had previously worked with us. This moment was both humbling and illuminating, especially as we mark nearly thirty years of presence in Cavite. It affirmed the importance of reaching out, making ourselves known, and planting seeds of connection.

This visit became a grace-filled moment of encounter: introducing our community and mission, strengthening ties with a respected state university, and inviting young people to reflect on how God might be calling them to live their one wild and precious life. Through a simple discernment tool, we encouraged them to begin asking deeper questions about purpose, service, and vocation. We trust that the experience was warmly received and that the seeds planted will continue to grow.

We are grateful to now have a relationship with Cavite State University and hope to make this an annual part of our vocation ministry—supporting the wider mission of the Church by walking with young people as they discern the many meaningful paths their lives may take.
