Congratulations Sister Anne Arabome, SSS!

By Sr. Jennifer Gaeta, SSS

Sr. Anne is the founder and director of the Sophia Institute of Theological Studies and Spiritual Formation in Namibia, Africa, an initiative dedicated to the spiritual formation and theological education of African women religious.

Though still in its early stages, the Sophia Institute has already made a remarkable impact in advancing this mission. Its success was such that Sr. Anne was offered the extraordinary opportunity to meet Pope Leo XIV, a special gift from friends working at the Vatican in recognition of her work.

The mission of the Sophia Institute is beautifully reflected in Sr. Anne’s own words:

“Religious women in Africa have limited opportunities for formation in theological studies and spirituality. There are so many gifted, talented, and competent women religious who are passionate about the mission of the Church—bringing the light of Christ to others. I have a dream that this initiative will be a means of empowering and reclaiming the dignity and beauty of African women religious and their communities through creative and contextualized theological reflection, formation, renewal, spiritual accompaniment, and Ignatian retreats.”

I was deeply honored to be invited to join Sr. Anne for this audience with Pope Leo. The experience was truly once in a lifetime, and I am profoundly grateful to Sr. Anne for extending this remarkable opportunity.

Congratulations, Sr. Anne, as you continue to touch lives and bring your vision to life through the Sophia Institute.
