What an unforgettable day!
The Spiritus 2026 Benefit Luncheon brought together Social Service Auxiliary members, donors, friends, and supporters from across Southern California to celebrate the enduring partnership of The Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation, the Sisters of Social Service, and the Social Service Auxiliary-a relationship rooted in faith, generosity, and a shared commitment to serving others. For nearly 75 years, this extraordinary partnership has strengthened ministries, transformed lives, and brought hope and compassion to countless individuals and families.
Guests enjoyed a joyful afternoon of fellowship, beginning with a lively cocktail hour and silent auction benefiting the ministries of the Sisters of Social Service. The celebration continued with a surprise appearance by the USC Trojan Marching Band, accompanied by the delightful members of US Song and Spirit, whose music and enthusiasm filled the room with energy and excitement. Their performance was a fitting tribute to the Leavey Foundation, whose generosity has also made a lasting impact at the University of Southern California.
The luncheon featured heartfelt reflections, a moving tribute video honoring the remarkable legacy of the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation, and the presentation of the 2026 Spiritus Award recognizing the Foundation’s extraordinary commitment to the Sisters of Social Service and the Social Service Auxiliary.
A particularly inspiring moment came when Sr. Maribeth Larkin, SSS, General Director, announced a $1 million Centennial Jubilee gift from the Sisters of St.
Joseph of Orange in honor of the Sisters of Social Service’s 100th Anniversary Jubilee-a beautiful testament to the bonds of friendship and shared mission among women religious communities.
We were honored to welcome special guests from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the Catholic Education Foundation, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, the Catholic Community Foundation, Loyola Marymount University, Dolores Mission, and Loyola High School, reflecting the broad impact of the Leavey Foundation’s generosity throughout our community.
The afternoon included beautiful moments of prayer and reflection, with an invocation from Sr. Joeline Santiago, SSS, and a closing blessing from Fr. Michael J. Engh, SJ, Chancellor of Loyola Marymount University.
Special thanks to Social Service Auxiliary President Kathryn Kenney, Spiritus 2026 Benefit Chair Ceci Nicholson, and her dedicated team for creating such a beautiful celebration, as well as Anthos Floral for the stunning arrangements and the Jonathan Club staff for their gracious hospitality.
As the Sisters of Social Service celebrate their Centennial Jubilee, Spiritus 2026 reminded us that extraordinary ministry is made possible through enduring partnerships of faith and generosity.
